Judith joined Comic Relief in November 2004 as The Grants Director responsible for both the International and UK Grants Teams which assess grant applications, over see the grants being awarded and monitor their progress. The department also devises the Grants Strategy which underpins all the charitable work Comic Relief supports.
Currently Judith is a Board Member of UnLtd, a charity supporting social entrepreneurs, of which Comic Relief was a founder member.
Judith started her career in cancer research, having gained a PhD from the University of London in 1985. Following further research at St Mary’s Hospital she made a radical career change and became a fundraiser in the disability sector, joining Scope in 1987.
In 1991 Judith became Head of Fundraising at WaterAid, overseeing a period of rapid growth and managing the Blue Peter Well Water Appeal in 1994. She made short visits to WaterAid funded partners in Uganda, Ethiopia and Bangladesh.
In 1997 Judith became Chief Executive of CancerLink, working with a UK wide network of 700 cancer self help and support groups. In 2000 she became a member of the Government’s Cancer Taskforce, to oversee the modernisation of cancer services in the NHS and worked closely with the cancer policy team in the Dept of Health. She led Cancerlink into a merger with Macmillan Cancer Relief in 2001. As Head of Community Links in Macmillan, Judith was responsible for leading the charity’s new strategic areas of work in Social Care and User Involvement, as well as managing 3 direct services – Cancerline, Patient grants and a new Benefits Helpline.
