Sainsbury's Fair Development Fund

CLOSING DATE – 11th February 2008

  • Applications for the second round of the Fair Development Fund will close on the 11th February 2008
  • Applications will be assessed by the Fair Development Fund Committee, Comic Relief’s Programme Review Group and our International Grants Committee. All projects will be subject to final approval by the Comic Relief Trustees in July 2008.

ABOUT THE FUND

The Fair Development Fund is a special fund financed by Sainsbury’s and run by Comic Relief which is designed to promote fairer trade and to enable more producers in the developing world to sell their produce as Fairtrade. Sainsbury’s have made an initial commitment to the Fund of £1 million over four years.

FUNDING CRITERIA

The Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund is looking to fund projects which:

  • Promote fairer trade in the developing world
  • Enable poor producers to find new routes to market
  • Allow more developing world producers to sell their produce as Fairtrade
  • Offer sustainable solutions to producers
  • Create broader and more collaborative ways of supporting fairtrade
  • Represent unique opportunities which would not normally be funded or supported by Comic Relief and/ or Sainsbury’s.

Please refer to the Comic Relief grant making principles (pages 6-7) and the Trade programme grant making guidelines (pages 20-21) in the document below for additional criteria by which applications will be judged:

Please note a number of specific criteria relevant to the Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund which do not apply to Comic Relief’s Trade programme:

  1. The Fair Development Fund will make grants to organizations of a charitable nature, not necessarily a UK registered charity, or trading for profit. If trading for profit, the organization will be required to reinvest profits, dividends or other income resulting from the grant for the common good
  2. The Fair Development Fund will consider projects outside of Africa, although preference will be given to projects in African countries
  3. The Fair Development Fund will consider more than one application per organization per per grant-making cycle.
