Step 2 of 3:  INTERNATIONAL Programmes

Sainsbury's Fair Development Fund

Sainsburys Fair Development Fund

  1. Why did we set up the Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund?

Sainsbury’s is the biggest UK retailer of Fairtrade products and a firm believer in sourcing from the developing world and Africa. Comic Relief has funded projects in Africa for over 20 years. Together we believe that economic growth around the world can be positive for small producers and their communities and we strive to find models which encourage pro-poor growth. The Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund is actively involved in transforming the lives of small producers in Africa, and the rest of the world, by developing partnerships between small producers, producer groups, NGOs, donors and retailers.

  2. What are we looking to fund?

The Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund strives to support market-led, scalable, replicable and innovative models working with small producers in Africa and the rest of the world to:

    • Bring new products to market, particularly Fairtrade products, with support from Sainsbury’s in the UK
    • Build new partnerships along the supply chain
    • Add value at producer level
    • Increase small producers’ competitiveness
    • Improve small producers’ sustainability.

Our aim is to support projects which build the capacity and improve the ability of small producer organisations to access new markets by:

    • Becoming more competitive
    • Adding value to their products
    • Bringing new products to market
    • Building new partnerships along the supply chain.

We are also keen to facilitate the transfer of skills and expertise from retailers and suppliers to small producers.

We are keen to support projects which have the potential to attract additional funding after the life of a grant.

    What countries will we fund?

Our focus is on Africa, specifically Sub-Saharan Africa, but we are willing to fund exceptional projects outside of this area. As a result of the FDF, we would expect to see an increase in grantees’ sales and an increase in the value of their products.

    Who can apply?

The Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund will make grants to organisations of a charitable nature, not necessarily a UK registered charity, or organisations trading for profit provided that any profits, dividends or other incomes resulting from the grant are used for the common good.

    How can you apply?

The Fair Development Fund is not open to general applications. For all initial enquiries about the Fund, please contact Comic Relief by emailing FairDevelopmentFund@comicrelief.com.
