Disadvantaged Communitites

<< Disadvantaged Communitites

In this programme, £5000 is the most you can apply for.

While many people in the UK enjoy the benefits of a prosperous economy, there are still local communities (both urban and rural) that suffer from economic and social deprivation. Living in these areas can be really tough, with high crime rates, inadequate services and facilities, poor public transport and high local prices for food and goods. Despite the many regeneration initiatives in some areas, many local people do not feel they have benefited or had a say in the decisions about what needs to change. This programme aims to put the power for change with local people.
This programme funds grassroots community organisations in areas affected by poverty or disadvantage. Its focus is on small scale local projects which were started by local residents who came together to try to make their community better. Most of the projects we fund in this programme represent an area the size of a housing estate, neighbourhood or village.
We will accept applications from community enterprises such as a credit unions or furniture recycling schemes. The annual turnover limit and the area size restrictions do not apply for these projects do not apply but you can still only apply for a maximum of £5,000.

What we will fund

  • Running costs, including core costs and project costs
  • Contributions to equipment and simple refurbishments to community buildings
  • Activities which help local people to be more involved in decision-making, such as carrying out surveys and research in the community, community newspapers, support for campaigning.
  • Activities which improve how effective the group is, such as training in bookkeeping or helping trustees understand their responsibilities.

What we want to achieve

You will need to show how your work will achieve one or more of the following outcomes.
We want to support schemes, ideas and activities run by people who live in communities affected by poverty and disadvantage to:

  • change things for the better;
  • get better services for their communities;
  • become more involved in local decision-making; and
  • run their community groups more effectively.
