IBM - Greenock

Bag Pipes, party atmosphere and a very successful night

A huge team effort ensured call taking and fund-raising for Sport Relief at IBM Greenock site on Friday 19th March was a great success.

About 140 volunteers, including family and friends, along with some volunteers from Cigna, took part on the night.  Donations taken via the Greenock centre amounted to almost £65,000, through 1700 calls on the night from the public.  In addition, almost £2,000 was raised throughout the site from various fund-raising activities from a weekly 50/50 draw, table tennis championships, a home baking stall, hula-hoop competition, 'sponge the manager' and a wonderful prize raffle with many prizes donated by local businesses.

Guests Tony Judd, professional coach for Greenock and Scotland cricket club, and Margaret McEleny, MBE, local Paralympic Swimming Champion, opened the event and then both went on the lines taking donations from the public.

Local Piper, Sean Connolly, welcomed the volunteers on arrival playing the Bag Pipes, and a number of students from James Watt College Beauty Department gave up their Friday evening to give neck and shoulder massage to our volunteer team!  In addition, we were delighted to welcome Stephen Rooney's Taekwon Do junior section who entertained and impressed our volunteers with their martial arts displays.  There was a tremendous party atmosphere, with everyone working together to ensure a very successful evening.
