Friends of the Treatment Action Campaign (FoTAC)
People with HIV in South Africa lack basic information about antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) so it’s almost impossible for them to make informed decisions about their health. Although ARVs are available in some health clinics, those in need do not always know about them, or know how to get them, especially in rural areas. Comic Relief is helping this project to educate people affected by HIV/AIDS, as well as key groups, such as trade union members, health workers, and local community groups, about the science, politics, and treatment of HIV/AIDS. As well as creating wider community understanding of the issues related to this disease, people affected by HIV/AIDS will also get to know their rights and entitlements to receiving ARVs and other relevant medical treatments. Additionally, national and regional campaigns will be conducted to raise awareness and to reduce the ignorance that leads to stigma and discrimination of those affected by HIV/AIDS.
