International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS
Women affected by HIV/AIDS across Africa remain some of the most stigmatised and marginalised people within their communities. Many are unaware of their rights, and as a result do not receive health services, such as sexual and reproductive care, and the HIV treatments which they are entitled to. Many women also suffer from domestic violence and abuse and are also unaware of the law and their rights, so can’t get the help they need to turn their lives around.
Comic Relief is supporting this project to organise meetings, activities and workshops, where over 640 women are being trained in the law, and to develop negotiation skills to demand their rights and claim entitlements to health services, HIV treatments, and protection from domestic violence and abuse. These trained women will then return to their communities and provide effective support to other women in their communities. As a result of this project, policies and practices that negatively affect HIV positive women across the three countries will be tackled more effectively in order to improve the lives of women affected by HIV/AIDS.
