Christian Aid
The civil war in Angola caused millions of people to flee their homes, abandoning their farms and livestock. For decades they eked out a living in towns and cities or in refugee camps. Now that the war has ended, many are returning home but they are struggling to make ends meet. In these rural communities there is no help to get them farming again and basic health and education services are barely functioning.
Comic Relief is supporting Christian Aid to help thousands of families rebuild their lives. They are providing seeds and tools to help people get their farms going again and are supporting tree planting schemes. A revolving loan scheme is also being set up for groups to buy livestock such as sheep and goats. The project is also helping to set up local farmers groups, where farmers get literacy and numeracy training so they can negotiate a better deal at market. On top of all that, the project is also helping to rebuild local facilities such as health centres, schools and roads and is supporting local organisations to pressure the government to improve the provision of basic health and education services.
