People Affected by Conflict

Save The Children Fund

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), young women and girls have been the most vulnerable victims of almost a decade of armed conflict. Although the war has officially ended, fighting still continues in the east of the country. Girls taken by armed groups are used as child soldiers, but more commonly subjected to sexual violence or forced into slave labour. In addition, girls who have fled or returned back to their communities, face further exclusion due to the stigma associated with their abuse. Despite girls making up almost half of the children taken by armed groups, their specific needs have been largely ignored.

Comic Relief is supporting Save the Children Fund to work in 8 regional communities to help girls rebuild their lives. Over 2,400 girls are being provided with practical skills such as sewing and tailoring in order to provide a more secure livelihood. Girls are also being supported to return to education, with school fees and teaching materials provided. Getting an education will be the best way for these girls to improve their lives and secure better futures.
Additionally, 4 health centres for each community are being created, providing care and training in reproductive health, child-care, and HIV/AIDS awareness for over 48,000 children. This project is making a massive difference to vulnerable girls’ lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
