Gaia Foundation
Comic Relief is supporting the Gaia Foundation to help some of the most marginalised small-scale farmers and farm workers in South Africa to increase the benefits they receive from trade and improve their access to markets. Fair Trade-certified small farmers in South Africa are being supported to build their own organisation and negotiate for better representation within the Fair Trade system. By processing their products themselves and developing new ones, producers are increasing household incomes and improving their position within South Africa. Through increasing their bargaining power, producers and workers are reducing inequalities in the distribution of resources and access to land in post-Apartheid South Africa. The project is working hard to ensure that marginalised workers, such as women and seasonal migrant workers, are also included in the benefits of Fair Trade.
