The concept of Fairtrade is now well established in Europe and the market for fairly traded products expanded 40% last year. Farmers and their families are provided with long-term relationships, a constant price, and funds for social investment in their communities. After 10 years of working with nut producers, Twin is ready to launch an ‘Ethical Nut Company’. Nut producers are particularly vulnerable to price fluctuations and to low prices because their product requires further treatment and storage. Building on their experiences with Café Direct, Divine Chocolate and AgroFair, the new company will provide for 48% ownership by the growers themselves. Comic Relief’s funding is ensuring that growers and producer groups are supported in technical aspects of meeting Fairtrade requirements, and that they can play an increasingly powerful role in determining the company’s future.
