African Outreach
Agbobloshie is a poor slum area in the centre of Accra, where about 30,000 people live in squalid conditions. The incidence of waterborne diseases is high, as is crime, drug use, prostitution and unemployment.
The overall aim is to improve the quality of life for Agbobloshie slum residents and reduce the sense of powerlessness which keeps them trapped in the poverty cycle. Comic Relief is supporting the project to target women, disabled people, street children and sex workers with a vocational training programme, supplemented by start-up funds for small business ideas. Some funds are being spent on constructing a community centre which will be the venue for the training and will also provide nursery facilities to enable women to go to work.
