Kroo Bay is a collection of temporary shelters perched alongside the open sewers of Freetown which open into the sea. Much of the area floods after heavy rain or high tides. There are a few irregular supplies of fresh water, no functional latrines, and no community buildings. This project is working to transform the lives of vulnerable young people and their communities in two of the most deprived slums of Freetown Sierra Leone. The slums lack all basic facilities; 50% of young adults have no regular income; and 50% are orphans, ex-combatants or disabled.
Comic Relief funds are providing young people with a package of vocational training and life skills. This will lead to an increased income and they’ll be trained and supported to work on issues such as HIV/AIDS, health and literacy in their community. Community Centres will be built to act as a hub for activity, and broader community structures formed to encourage improved facilities. Younger children and those not ready for vocational training are also being offered a range of recreational and informal education opportunities too.
