Concern Universal
The women and girls living in the rural areas of Cross River State in the South of Nigeria, face high levels of injustice and inequality both in matters relating to money and property. In addition, living in strong male-dominated society women and girls are often subject to violence by partners, and within their families and communities, and sex-trafficking is common practice. The tradition of female genital mutilation is also widespread. In this environment women have little say over their lives and very few opportunities to be independent or earn a living. This project will support 48 local groups of women in 24 communities, to come together in order to create a strong collective voice, so that together they can effectively address the issues and harmful traditional practices affecting them. Within each group, 25 women will be trained in legal, conflict, and health matters, so that they are aware of their rights, and how to practically exercise them in their communities.
