Many women in Northern Ghana live in extreme poverty. In a society governed by traditional social norms, women's rights are consistently undermined. Women have little influence in decision-making, even within the home. Very few strong women's groups exist within local communities to change the situation.
Comic Relief funds are helping to provide information and training to women in literacy, health, women's rights and political participation. Small loans are also being provided to give women some financial independence. Over the course of the project 15 women's groups will be chosen for more intensive support with the long-term aim that these groups will be in a stronger position to speak up for local women. As a result of this project, women's status in their communities and society will improve and they will have a greater say over their own lives.
