UK
On the first day that Comic Relief made grants back in 1985 one of the recipients was Centrepoint - a little known charity working to help homeless young people get off the streets and turn their lives around – a key issue of the time. They received £650 from Comic Relief which provided them with much needed washing machines.
In that first year of grant making we gave £62,686 to UK organisations – just like Centrepoint now a high profile national charity - we’ve grown a lot too and in 2007 our Trustees approved over £28million in grants to UK charities and organisations.
Since 1985 we have spent £163m across the UK from the Highlands & Islands to Penzance and Belfast to Bangor. We’ve made major investments to tackle many issues including Domestic Violence and Alcohol and Drug misuse amongst Young People whilst not forgetting the transformation that small amounts of money can bring to local communities. Click here for details on the projects that we have funded since Red Nose Day 2005.
