People with long term mental health problems have the lowest employment rate of any group of disabled people, despite many of them wanting to find work. Mind Diggers provides volunteering and training opportunities in gardening and horticulture for people with mental health problems. It has piloted a gardening and landscape scheme which provides a valuable service to members of the local community who are unable to undertake this work themselves. They now want to develop this into an independent, user-led social enterprise which will offer employment opportunities to people with mental health problems. Comic Relief is supporting them to develop the project. The result will be that people with mental health problems will have increased confidence and self-esteem, as well as increased access to volunteering, training and employment opportunities.
