Refugees and Asylum Seekers

North Glasgow Community Food Initiative

Parts of Glasgow have experienced varying degrees of tension since asylum seekers began to be dispersed there in 2001. Local people have had few opportunities to meet and mix with new arrivals and little preparation work was done to make the area ready. Alongside this, asylum seekers have been dispersed to areas experiencing high levels of deprivation. To address these problems, North Glasgow Community Food Initiative set up an allotment and fruit and veg scheme. This group provides local people, refugees and asylum seekers with the chance to meet and participate in joint gardening activities and to buy cheap fruit and veg at the same time. Comic Relief is helping this project to build relationships between the refugee community and local residents to reduce some of the ongoing tensions in these communities.
