Today’s good news – speaking out about elder abuse

As something that tragically goes on behind closed doors, until recently the abuse of older people hasn’t been at the fore of policy leaders’ minds.  With no solid data about the number of older people affected, government bodies weren’t making it a priority to tackle the issue.  So we made a drama called ‘Dad’ which highlighted the terrible nature of elder abuse and got the attention of those who could truly make a difference.  As a result, the Department of Health joined us to co-fund the first ever elder abuse prevalence study which has led to a government commitment to implement new procedures to protect older people from abuse.
