Day 2: Alesha Takes a Wee Tumble!2nd March 2009
As day two of the BT Red Nose Climb comes to a close, the celebrities are desperate for a rest after struggling with the harsh terrain.
Alesha Dixon has become the first of the celebrity climbers to take a tumble during the second leg of the trek up Mount Kilimanjaro – whilst answering a call of nature! After disappearing behind some nearby greenery, she slipped and rolled several metres down a steep ledge. Thankfully, the rest of the group were assured she was ok when her distinctive laughter rang out from the bushes.
Pop star, Alesha was closely followed by pal, Denise Van Outen who also tripped later in the day and snapped her climbing pole in half!
The girls have been getting to grips with their new gadget, called a ‘shewee’. It’s a plastic funnel which allows them to pee in private whilst embarking on their journey up the mountain!
As for the boys, they’ve been making good progress during today’s 700 metre climb. Despite Gary Barlow still suffering from severe back pain, his condition is improving the further he climbs as his back muscles begin to loosen up. Together with Ben Shephard and Chris Moyles, the three boys took it nice and slowly today playing ‘Name that TV Tune’ at the back of the group!
In total, the team walked for seven hours during the second day of the BT Red Nose Climb, moving out of the lush rainforest into an open heath terrain. The A-listers set up camp for the evening in a volcanic crate where they took in breathtaking views of the summit and realised how far they’ve got to climb.
Although it’s been tough going so far, the group are being spurred on by the overwhelming support of the Great British public who have donated over £580,000 already. Added to that incredible generosity, U2 frontman, Bono, announced on the Radio One Breakfast Show this morning that he would donate £1 for every metre the team climbs - which will amount to approximately £6000.
