Eddie wins a Sports Personality of the Year Special Award
15th December 2009He’s always been a winner in our books, but now he’s got an actual prize to show for it.
Yes, Eddie Izzard – Comedian and Sport Relief hero – has won a Sports Personality of the Year Special Award for his astounding challenge in the summer of 2009.
For those of you who missed it, Eddie ran an absolutely mind-blowing 43 marathons in 51 days around the whole of the UK, clocking up – wait for it – more than 1,160 miles along the way.
He had to take daily ice baths, lost his toenails and ate over 6,000 calories a day just so he could keep going. And he did it all for Sport Relief – so we’re extremely proud of him.
Eddie’s so far raised a whopping £250,000 for his incredible efforts, and donations are still coming in. You can follow every painful and heroic step of his mammoth challenge in a special documentary to be shown on BBC Three in the New Year.
Eddie received his award from world marathon record-holder Paula Radcliffe and comedy actor James Corden in front of an 11,000-strong audience at Sheffield Arena on Sunday 13 December.
Oh, and Eddie is not alone – his is the first of a number of amazing celebrity challenges taking place to get the whole nation geared up for the Sport Relief Weekend, from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st March 2010.
