The Nation Rises to the Challenge for Sport Relief
23rd March 2010Over 165,000 people across the length and breadth of the country took to the streets yesterday (Sunday 21st March) to take part in the Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile, along with a host of famous faces including Eddie Izzard, David Cameron, Rufus Hound, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Beverley Knight, Colin Jackson, Norman Cook, Frank Skinner, Jodie Kidd and James Cracknell. Milers in cities from Brighton to Belfast completed 1, 3, or 6 miles at 16 Flagship Mile cities around the UK and hundreds of other Mile events that took place.
From teeny-tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock, there was something for everyone on the big day which was filled with energy, entertainment and excitement.
Eddie Izzard said: "I ran all eight waves in London so I could run with the 16,000 people here. Everyone gave me such amazing support during my marathon challenge the least I could do was run with them today. It was great to see so many people running today - everyone can do the Sport Relief Mile and that's what's so birlliant about it."
Official Guinness World Record adjudicators also recorded the most amount of people hula hooping simultaneously across the UK for two minutes to set a new world record for the most amount of people hula hooping at the same time.
Sport Relief also announced an incredible total of £29,323,818 on Friday night, after a spectacular evening of entertainment was beamed into the nation's tellies.
Sport Relief would like to say a huge thank you to each and every person who has donated money or given their time to "Rise to the Challenge" – we could not have done it without you! And for those who have still to pay in their hard-earned cash, please go to sportrelief.com to do so.
