On 20th April this year, Comic Relief hosted the Big Debate event, with our partners Debate Mate and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Children and young people from schools in London and Leeds gathered to debate some of the most challenging global issues facing their generation. Some of the best speakers and contributors to the debate were presented with awards by Bill Gates, who surprised the audience by coming to hear the debate in person.
Among those who received an award was Firdaws Hashim from the Kensington Aldridge Academy in West London. Firdaws was recognised for her passion and the clarity with which she spoke – everyone who attended the event was touched by her energy and enthusiasm.
Firdaws tragically died with other members of her family in the horrific fire at Grenfell Tower in June. Our thoughts are with those closest to Firdaws as they remember her and her family at memorial events today and tomorrow.
