Spice Girls donate to girl power with exclusive t-shirt range for Comic Relief gender fund

12th November 2018

Tell you what I want - what I really really want - a Spice Girls t-shirt for Comic Relief’s Gender Justice.

Following the exciting announcement last week of the Spice Girls reunion tour, we are proud to share some more very special news today - Emma, Melanie C, Mel B and Geri have designed an exclusive t-shirt to support Power Up, a programme within Comic Relief’s Gender Justice pillar.

Money raised by the #IWannaBeASpiceGirl t-shirts, now available at Represent(opens in new window) for three weeks, will be donated to Comic Relief’s Gender Justice fund to help us champion equality for women and girls here in the UK.

Comic Relief has been funding programmes tackling gender-based sexual and domestic violence and supporting women and girl’s empowerment since we began. This money will help us to continue supporting organisations doing such fantastic work to help drive change.

Liz Warner, Chief Executive of Comic Relief, said: “Girl Power is a shared passion.  Right now, this movement for equality is uniting the world in the most spectacular way and this very generous gift is going to help us support even more organisations fighting for the rights of women and girls here in the UK.  We are proud to be the ones to take this forward with the Spice Girls and look forward to seeing the difference we can make together.”

The Spice Girls have been great friends of Comic Relief for many years and this is a generous and much-appreciated collaboration. We are grateful they have chosen our Gender Justice programme to receive money from their t-shirt campaign.

The World Bank estimates that funding to women’s rights organisations has fallen by more than half over the last 5 years. Yet in the UK alone, it is estimated that every week three women take their own lives because of domestic abuse, nearly 80% of companies in the UK pay women less than men and one in seven young women struggle to afford sanitary towels.

In the era of #MeToo, Gender Justice is more important than ever, and as we want to increase the impact we can have in this area, this gift from the Spice Girls and their fans couldn’t have come at a better time.
