A statement from Comic Relief:
We’ve had a Sunday paper get in touch about why we funded significantly more grants in the UK in 2020 and question if this means we’ve changed our funding strategy to reduce international project support. As this is simply not true, we’d like to explain:
Our funding is normally split evenly across UK and international projects. 2020 was an unprecedented year with the Covid-19 crisis and as part of our emergency pandemic response we helped deliver a special one-off UK fundraising campaign, the successful ‘The Big Night In’ which raised an amazing £78m for UK projects.
This funding was split between Comic Relief and two other charities and meant that we delivered significantly more funding to UK projects throughout 2020. We want to thank everyone who donated to this great appeal.
We record all our funding in our annual report and in the last financial published period (July 2019 – July 2020) we awarded over £84 million to vital projects which includes £43 million to UK projects and £41 million to international projects.
We hope this clarifies any questions about the fantastic project work we have supported during 2020. We remain firmly committed to helping projects both across the UK and the world.
