WHAT DOES COMIC RELIEF DO?

Our mission combines Comic and Relief. We believe that helping others can be easy and fun, even in the face of the challenges we face every day. We believe this because we’ve seen the power of people coming together to create change over our 30+ year history. When we come together to help others, we unleash the best in all of us. We fund and partner with organisations that support people in a crisis but are also building a better future for us all by focusing on prevention and the root causes.

WHERE DOES THE MONEY RAISED BY COMIC RELIEF GO?

All year-round, the money donated to Comic Relief works hard to support some incredible projects making a change to people's lives across the UK and around the world.

DO I NEED A FUNDRAISING AGREEMENT?

There are certain circumstances where the law requires you to have a fundraising agreement with us. Have a look at the points below and, if any of them are relevant to your fundraising activity, please email our fundraising team at fundraising@comicrelief.com(opens in new window) for a copy of the fundraising agreement form to be filled in and returned to us.

You’ll need an agreement if:

  • You’re raising money for Red Nose Day in the course of a business e.g. “my shop sells cakes for 50p, and 30p from the sale of each cake will go to Red Nose Day

  • You’re deducting costs from the money you raise for Red Nose Day, for example to cover costs of the event.

  • The money you raise will be split between Red Nose Day and another charity.

  • You want to use the Comic Relief logo as part of your fundraising.

  • You are fundraising as part of a large event. (This does not include organised event such as running races etc, where you’re asking for sponsorship)

  • Fundraising including children, young people, vulnerable adults

    (excluding school settings)

  • There are any health and safety risks involved in your fundraising.

Can I have a letter of authorisation?

We no longer provide letters of authorisation, but there are certain circumstances where you are required to have a fundraising agreement with us. Please see above for more details on how to acquire one of these and if you need one for your fundraising activity.

If none of these instances above apply, you can still request a fundraising agreement (for example, your local authority may require it).

Are there any legal dos and don’ts I should consider?

There are, yes! For handy advice on keeping your event safe and legal, please have a read of our Fundraising Do's and Don'ts.

CAN SOMEONE COME AND FILM OUR EVENT?

It’s amazing to hear that you are planning to do something funny for money this Red Nose Day.

As much as we’d love to be able to attend every event that’s organised for Red Nose Day, we’re sad to say it just isn’t possible as we don’t have the resources. Please also note that the BBC have full editorial control over the content for the Red Nose Day night of TV – you may be able to get in touch with your local media to see if they are able to cover your event.

We’d still love to hear all about how your event goes, so please do feel free to share any stories or photos from your event. You can do so here: comicrelief.com/rednoseday/fundraise/stories

We know that it’s thanks to people like you that Red Nose Day is such a success, so we’d like to wish you the very best of luck with your fundraising!

Can I have a celebrity at my event?

It’s great to hear you’re planning on doing something funny for money this Red Nose Day!

All the celebrities that give their time to support Red Nose Day do so for free, and when you add up the TV appearances, media interviews, and everything else they do, that’s often a lot of time. Sadly though, that means we can’t ask them to attend fundraising events as well – but you could always try asking local celebrities or your local mayor.

I WORK FOR AN ORGANISATION THAT WOULD LIKE To partner with Comic Relief for Red Nose Day?

We work with a really wide range of organisations – big and small. To see how you might get involved with us, visit our partners section, or if you’re after the personal touch, drop our Corporate Team an email at partners@comicrelief.com(opens in new window). If you pay UK tax and you would like to Gift Aid your donation, we can claim an additional 25% of the value of your donation from HMRC, it won't cost you a penny but means your donation can reach even further.

Please note that the money that Comic Relief claims back from HMRC as part of the Gift Aid scheme will be treated as unrestricted funds and used to support our general work, even if the original donation was made towards a specific appeal.

If you make a personal donation to Comic Relief, you will be asked to declare whether you would like us to claim Gift Aid. This will be either by:

  • Ticking the Gift Aid box on the donation page online.

  • Saying ‘yes' to the Gift Aid question whilst donating via the phone. Filling in the Gift Aid form sent to you by text after making a text donation.

  • Asking your sponsors to tick the Gift Aid box on your sponsorship form.

If you’re making a personal donation please give your full name and home address and tick the box or we can’t claim Gift Aid. To say ‘Yes’ to Gift Aid, you must be a UK taxpayer and understand that if you pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax in the current tax year than the amount of Gift Aid claimed on all of your donations it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

Please note, Gift Aid cannot apply to CAF cards (as the tax has already been reclaimed).

WHAT IF I AM A HIGHER RATE TAXPAYER?

The charity reclaims the tax on your donation only at the basic rate, even if you are a higher rate taxpayer. If you are a higher rate taxpayer, you can claim the difference between the higher rate of tax and the current basic rate of tax of 20% on your Self-Assessment return.
