Students from the UK visit schools in Ghana

12th May 2017

As well as raising money to help change lives, Comic Relief has always been committed to raising awareness of poverty and social injustice.  A key part of this work takes place in schools across the UK where Comic Relief materials are used to explore what life is like for people living in poverty or facing social injustice in the UK and across the world's poorest countries.

One initiative that Comic Relief supports is a webcast service for schools, featuring videos made by kids from Fairtrade cocoa growing communities in Ghana. The webcasts are on the Pa Pa Paa LIVE website(opens in new window) and are made in collaboration with the Kuapa Kokoo Fairtrade cocoa co-operative in Ghana. This co-operative has benefited from Comic Relief's support since 1999.

Earlier this year, ten students from the John Fisher school in Surrey went to Ghana where they got to spend time at a Kuapa Kokoo cocoa farm.  They also visited two schools where students have benefitted from the Fairtrade Premium which funding from Comic Relief has helped to secure.

The John Fisher School subscribes to the innovative Pa Pa Paa LIVE website, so while they were in Ghana, the students decided to donate camera and computer equipment to the Ghana schools as well as spend time showing them how to use their new equipment. The students also took some promotional photos for the new-look Fairtrade Dubble(opens in new window) chocolate bars whose cocoa comes from the Kuapa Kokoo co-operative.

By giving students from the UK the chance to connect with students in Ghana, and helping them to understand the importance of farmers securing a fair price for their produce, they are better able to understand why fundraising for Comic Relief is so vital and the difference they can make.
