Tuesday 3 February: Kit Brown and Maddie Moate are today revealed as the first ever official School Champions for Comic Relief – tasked with bringing silliness, creativity and community spirit into classrooms across the UK ahead of Red Nose Day on Friday 20 March.

Much loved familiar faces within classrooms, children’s media and education, this dynamic duo will hope to inspire students, teachers, parents and guardians to get involved and help raise life changing funds. As the theme of this year’s Red Nose Day is Take Yourself Funny for Money, they are ready to tap into their silly selves to do some serious good.

Kit Brown, BBC Bitesize presenter and inspirational Year 5 primary school teacher, became a TikTok sensation with 2 million followers through sharing his passion for teaching and educating the next generation – best known for putting his own educational spins on the likes of Taylor Swift songs and raps to engage with pupils. British children’s television star and award-winning CBeebies presenter, Maddie Moate, stars in her own educational series, ‘Maddie’s Do You Know?’ which follows Maddie as she explores the world and discovers how everyday objects work.

Together as School Champions, Kit and Maddie will create new and exciting content to inspire classrooms around the country to fundraise for Comic Relief and encourage them to learn more about the important work that donations will support, from tackling food insecurity to homelessness.

Kit Brown said: “I’m a huge advocate for engaging the younger generation by making learning fun and relatable. When you bring what pupils already love into the classroom, like their favourite pop songs, it instantly lifts the energy, and you see a big shift in the room. For me, it’s all about finding new ways to motivate pupils and getting them to care, so when the opportunity came up to become a Red Nose Day School Champion, it was a big yes.

“I still remember my mum buying me the latest Red Nose and how excited I felt turning up at school in the newest T-shirt. Now, as a teacher, I love creating that same excitement for my pupils for Red Nose Day and thinking of new ways to have fun together but also have really important conversations about the issues that donations support. I'm so proud to be a School Champion and can’t wait to get stuck in!”

Maddie Moate added: “It’s such a privilege to be asked to become a School Champion for Comic Relief and get involved in all the fun up close. Growing up, Red Nose Day felt like the biggest event at school, from finding out what the new Red Nose design would be to having a whole day of non-uniform, silly fun.

“I feel proud to be a part of something which brings the whole country together to have a laugh and raise money for such important causes. It feels needed now more than ever.

“I can’t wait to see all the seriously silly and creative things schools come up with this Red Nose Day.”

With Kit and Maddie’s support, this year’s Red Nose Day fundraising packs are absolutely brimming with goofy greatness and a range of activities for pupils and teachers to take part in – from channelling their silly sporting abilities to watching their favourite teacher take on an epically embarrassing challenge. With something for all ages to enjoy, from early years all the way through to secondary school, a whole host of free resources and fundraising ideas are available online at www.comicrelief.com/schools(opens in new window)

Here is a peak at just some of the fun activities that schools could do this year…

Tour de Farce Calling all sports enthusiasts to the playground. For these Olympics, you’ll need to think silly! Switch tennis rackets for frying pan tournaments, run races in flippers or watch teachers attempt toddler-bike sprints as they go for Comedy Gold. Pupils can take part or donate to watch the chaos unfold from the sidelines.

Crowdfund my cringe All willing teachers can step up this Red Nose Day and cringe for a great cause by taking on an epically embarrassing challenge. But not just any challenge, one chosen by the pupils – whether it’s rapping in assembly or dancing in the playground. Teachers, set a fundraising target and if your pupils hit the total, it’s all to play for – cue the chaos!

Bake yourself funny for money Shake up your bake sale by asking budding chefs to render their favourite member of staff in cake or biscuit form - from tasty Rich Tea-chers to a dunkable deputy head!

Red to toe Are you red-dy? From scarlet socks to ruby slippers or a crimson cape (or just a classic Red Nose Day tee), ask everyone to wear red in return for a donation. Bonus points to anyone who goes red from head to toe.

Blue Peter gets ‘Reddy’ for Red Nose Day On Friday 20 March, Blue Peter will be joining in the Red Nose Day fun and taking themselves funny for money. In true Blue Peter style, the team will be going BIG! As well, as turning RED, expect daft presenter challenges, celebrity guests and a closer look at this year’s doodle-tastic Red Nose!

Design-Yer Nose This Red Nose Day, Comic Relief is putting its famous Red Nose in pupils, parents and teachers’ hands through a first-of-a-kind blank canvas, Design-Yer Nose. It’s an opportunity to get pupils drawing, doodling and dazzling to turn their Noses into something that is uniquely their own – all while spreading humour, kindness and compassion. Encourage their imagination and creativity with markers, stickers, crayons and who Nose what else to make their Red Nose unique to them. So, roll up those sleeves, get thinking and doodle to your heart’s content! Schools can get Red Nose Multipacks, which includes 30 Design-Yer Noses, plus a free resource sheet to practise their designs, by heading to comicrelief.com/shop(opens in new window).

Mr Doodle said: “Creativity has always been a huge part of my life, so being a judge for the Design-Yer Nose competition is incredibly exciting! I love seeing how creative kids can be when they let their imaginations run wild, and I can’t wait to see the amazing, doodle-tastic ideas they come up with as they put their own spin on such an iconic symbol. Let the doodling begin!”

This Red Nose Day, we could all do with a little joy. Encouraging people across the nation to don their best smiles and silliness for the day, a donation could go a long way in helping to support people with the basic essentials that everyone has the right to – food, shelter and safety.

How your donations could help

  • £5 could help feed a child for a day at a community hub during school holidays in the UK, stopping them from going hungry

  • £10 could help provide after school lessons for a child seeking safety in the UK, helping them progress in their education

  • £25 could provide a young person in the UK who has experienced homelessness with a starter pack, helping them to take the first steps towards thriving independently in a new home

  • £36 could equip 20 students in South Africa with the stationery and basic learning resources they need for a month, helping them complete homework and supporting their ongoing education

Mckesha's story Donations to Red Nose Day can transform lives like Mckesha’s, whose story is spotlighted in this year’s fundraising pack. Raised in Atlantis, South Africa, as a result of much crime and violence, Mckesha spent most of her time indoors when it wasn’t safe to play on the streets. But thanks to Skateistan, a Comic Relief-funded project, Mckesha has been offered a safe place to play, now thriving outdoors and learning new skateboarding tricks. From once never venturing outdoors, Mckesha has developed a range of new skills and her confidence has grown, helping her to make new friends. The project helps to educate, inspire and empower young people, giving them access to resources to help them reach their full potential. Your support makes this – and much more – possible.

Samir Patel, CEO of Comic Relief, said: “Every year, we are amazed by the incredible energy and enthusiasm schools bring to Red Nose Day, proving that silliness can go a long way to tackling serious issues. The kindness and generosity schools show for others, never fails to blow us all away.

“This year is all about taking ourselves funny for money and we’re excited to welcome Kit and Maddie on board as our new School Champions to help lead the way. With their passion for creativity and for making learning fun, I have no doubt they will bring even more silliness to classrooms around the country, while also inspiring important conversations about how laughter can be turned into life-changing support. We can’t wait to see all the brilliant things schools get up to."

Samir added: “At a time of growing uncertainty, more and more people are struggling with the most basic things – eating regularly, sleeping safely and living without fear. Money raised this Red Nose Day will help people get the essentials they need to survive and we’re hugely grateful for everything schools do to help us reach those most in need.”
